In the quadrature of curves, the method of exhaustions was most ancient, whereby similar circumscribed and inscribed polygons, by continually increasing the number of their sides, were made to approach the curve until the space contained between them was exhausted, or reduced to an inappreciable quantity. The sides of the polygons, it was evident, must then be infinitely small.
The germ of algebra may be discerned in the works of Diophantus of Alexandria, who is supposed to have lived in the second century of our era. In that Egyptian school Euclid had formerly collected the great truths of geometry, and arranged them in logical sequence. Archimedes, in Syracuse, had attempted the solution of the higher problems by the method of exhaustions.
The headaches to which physical exhaustions always made him subject had annoyed him greatly of late, had rendered him irritable. His eyes bothered him a reflex from his run-down condition, he thought, combined with a slight inflammation due to the glare of sun or yellowing grass. Boracic acid helped very little.

Genius thrown into this peculiar state has produced some noble effusions.

But we have met by the powers of the Constitution these great dangers prophesied when they would arise as likely to be our doom the distractions of civil strife, the exhaustions of powerful war, the intervention of the regularity of power through the violence of assassination.
But, after all, must he fight? His questions all unsettled and his mind confused from the terrible exhaustions of the march, he waited. He surveyed the neighborhood, with a view to possible battle. On his left rose a ridge that swung to northward between the advancing column and his own position.
