Quoth Ed Denef, 'What ails thee, O Aslan? And he answered, 'I know now for certain that I am the son of Alaeddin Abou esh Shamat and I would have thee avenge me of my father's murderer. 'And who was thy father's murderer? asked Ed Denef. 'Ahmed Kemakim the arch- thief, replied Aslan.

'I would seize any opportunity to pay my respects to you, replied Tancred; 'but this occasion is most agreeable to me. 'And when, noble traveller, did you arrive at Esh Sham? 'But this morning; we were last from Hasbeya. Tancred then inquired after Eva, and Besso led him to his daughter.

When Aslan heard this, he said in himself, 'Most like this slave-girl was my mother Jessamine and my father was no other than Alaeddin Abou esh Shamat. So he went out from him, sorrowful, and met Ahmed ed Denef, who exclaimed at sight of him, 'Glory be to Him to whom none is like! 'At what dost thou marvel, O my chief? asked Hassan Shouman.

In many of the wadis, and particularly in the gorges between Wadi Feiran and Wadi Esh Sheikh, there are water-worn banks showing that, at no very remote period, the winter floods must have risen fifty feet in channels where the growth of acacias and tamarisks and the testimony of the Arabs concur to prove that they have not risen six feet within the memory or tradition of the present inhabitants.

Locher has cited an instance of avulsion of the finger with restitution of the avulsed portion; and Brulet, Van Esh, Farmer, Ponteau, Regnault, and Rosenberg cite instances of reunion of a digit after amputation or severance. Eve's "Remarkable Cases in Surgery" contains many instances of reunion of both fingers and thumbs, and in more recent years several other similar cases have been reported.

"Toddie," said I, "do you love your Uncle Harry?" "Esh, I DO love you." "Then tell me how that ridiculous song comforts you." "Makes me feel good, an' all nicey," replied Toddie. "Wouldn't you feel just as good if I sang, 'Plunged in a gulf of dark despair'?" "No, don't like dokdishpairs; if a dokdishpair done anyfing to me, I'd knock it right down dead."

When the latter saw him, he took him in his lap and glorified his Lord for that which He had created and fashioned forth; then eyeing him straitly, he saw that he was the likest of all creatures to Alaeddin Abou esh Shamat; and God informed his heart with love of the boy.

But the demi-gods lay down in their heathery lands, for once content though so far from the courts of heaven, and even half forgot their heavenly rights, and sighed no more for power over wind and snow. Meoul Ki Ning was on his way with a lily from the lotus ponds of Esh to offer it to the Goddess of Abundance in her temple Aoul Keroon.

The latter, spying his mother, would have thrown himself upon her: but the Amir held him back and said to Jessamine, 'Come hither, O damsel. So she came to him, and he said to her, 'Whose son is this? Quoth she, 'He is my son and the darling of my heart. 'Who is his father? asked the Amir; and she answered, 'His father was Alaeddin Abou esh Shamat, but now he is become thy son. Quoth Khalid, 'Alaeddin was a traitor. 'God deliver him from treason! replied she.

Then he took Alaeddin and clothing him anew, carried him to his daughter's house, where he left him at the door, whilst he himself went in to the young lady and gave her the bond, saying, 'Take the bond of thy dowry, for I have married thee to a handsome youth by name Alaeddin Abou esh Shamat; so do thou use him with all consideration. Then he left her and went to his own lodging.
