"I don't feel at all well," was the answer. "I think I have the epizootic, and I don't want any breakfast." "Oh, dear!" cried Nurse Jane. "And all the nice cakes I have baked. I know what I'll do," she said to herself. "I'll call in Dr. Possum. Perhaps Uncle Wiggily needs some of the roots and herbs that grow in the woods wintergreen, slippery elm or something like that. I'll call Dr. Possum."

This train of symptoms constitutes mainly, if not wholly, the essence of an occasional epidemic not unlike some forms of influenza or epizootic disease, and the bite of a rabid animal is not always, to an animal so bitten, the exciting cause of the disease, but merely an accidental concomitant in the prevailing disorder.

Persons forget that there are several epidemics which prove equally difficult to manage on the part of the physician, such as cholera, yellow fever, etc. The poison in these contagious, epizoötic diseases is so virulent that the animals may be regarded as dead from the moment they are attacked.

During the epizoötic epidemic we had at our stables innumerable calls from doctors and judges and clergymen. Everybody asked about our health. Groomsmen bathed our throats, and sat up with us nights, and furnished us pocket-handkerchiefs. For the first time in years we had quiet Sundays.

Hogs had been kept on the farm for years, and, so far as I could learn, there had been no epizoötic disease. The swine had had free range most of the time, and the specimens which I bought were healthy and as well grown as could be expected. They were not what I wanted, either in breed or in development, so they had been disposed of, all but two.

My mind has been easy on the question of the health of my hogs ever since; and with reason, for there has been no epizoötic or other serious form of disease in my piggery, in spite of the fact that there are often more than 1200 pigs of all degrees crowded into this five-acre lot.

They would soon find that with the stomach there is no compromise that beyond a certain degree of abstinence it is impossible to go that strict necessity can be curtailed but little without injury to the health; and, as for increasing the product, there comes a storm, a drought, an epizootic, and all the hopes of the farmer are dashed.

Is the epizoötic pleuro-pneumonia of cattle susceptible of being transmitted from diseased to healthy animals by cohabitation? 2dly. In the event of such contagion's existing, would all the animals become affected, or what proportion would resist the disease? 3dly. Amongst the animals attacked by the disease, how many recover, and under what circumstances? How many succumb? 4thly.

"I have sent orders to the nearest provinces in order that within the shortest time possible horses be brought for sale, but I cannot assure Your Excellency that we will have the number of 500 that you need, because there are not many horses in this vicinity, owing to deaths from epizoötic diseases in January, February, and March last.

"But I am so sick that I don't know what to do, and I'm far from my home, and from my friends, the Wibblewobble family, and, oh, dear! it's just awful." "Let me look at your tongue," said the rabbit, and when Grandfather Goosey Gander stuck it out, Uncle Wiggily said: "Why, you have the epizootic very bad. Very bad, indeed! But perhaps I can cure you.
