The Mormon war has closed for years the great emigrant road to California and Oregon, over the South Pass and Salt Lake valley, leaving open only the route along the 32d parallel of latitude, through Arizona.

Unfortunately, however, 'the evil that men do lives after them, and the ignorant Boer farmer continued to imagine that his southern relatives were in bondage, just as the descendant of the Irish emigrant still pictures an Ireland of penal laws and an alien Church.

Freedom of conscience, exemption from taxation, except by their own consent; gratuities in land to every emigrant, and other wholesome regulations claimed the prompt legislative action of the infant colony. In 1707, a company of Huguenots, as the French Protestants were called, settled on the Trent.

The vest was one of these grandfather's clock vests, that stop short, never to go again, a sort of emigrant vest, that comes high. It was not a long, lingering, emotional vest; it was not what would be called a charitable vest, because charity begins at home, and covers a multitude of back pay into the treasury.

The snake was more tenacious of life than I had dreamed. But if I erred, I did not err alone. Mordecai, whom I found immersed deeper and deeper in continental politics, and who scarcely denied his being the accredited agent of the emigrant princes, gave his opinion of this strange portion of French society with much more promptitude than he probably would of the probable fall or rise of stocks.

He spoke with ecstasy of Paris under the Monarchy: and yet the particular facts, which made up his description, left as deep a conviction on my mind, of French worthlessness, as his own tale had done of emigrant ingratitude. Since my arrival in Germany, I have not met a single person, even among those who abhor the Revolution, that spoke with favour, or even charity of the French emigrants.

'You are an emigrant and this is the first sweep-well you have tried to work. Well, now, you have got to learn, and he showed me how simple it was. He was much interested when he heard of our party and of their camping out. 'Stay a minute till I tell mother. Coming back to the door he cried to me to go on with the water and he would fetch milk after a while.

He travels by the shortest route to Bremen and steps on board an emigrant steamer for New York. During the long hours of the voyage the people sit on deck and talk of the great country to which they are all bound. Before the last lighthouse on the coast of Europe is lost to sight, Gunnar seems to have all America at his finger-ends.

Hence overland travelers on the Southern Pacific trains are often surprised to see vast flocks of sheep and hear the bleating of the lambs at unlooked for stations at the highest points of the Sierra Nevada, as at Soda Springs, Cisco, Emigrant Gap, Blue Canyon, or sidings on the way. There is a large mining industry within the Reserve.

There wasn't no humour in the situation for him. "How much is your water for humans?" asks one emigrant. "Can't you read that sign?" Texas Pete asks him. "But you don't mean two bits a head for HUMANS!" yells the man. "Why, you can get whisky for that!" "You can read the sign, can't you?" insists Texas Pete.
