It is amusing to observe, that, while he thus criticises the style and language of his correspondent, his own spelling, in every second line, convicts him of deficiency in at least one common branch of literary acquirement: we find thing always spelt think; whether, where, and which, turned into wether, were, and wich; and double m's and s's almost invariably reduced to "single blessedness."
The assumption of it is that a man criticises this world as if he were house-hunting, as if he were being shown over a new suite of apartments.
He shows the real meaning and end of education, the value of labor and of a purpose in life; he treats of nature, science, art, literature, religion; he defines the purpose of government, showing that soul-life, not money or trade, is the measure of national greatness; and he criticises the general injustice of his age, quoting a heartrending story of toil and suffering from the newspapers to show how close his theory is to daily needs.
