Maybe it is sweet to sit in a painted gallery and be a queen, but I have very little considered it; only, here is a King that crieth for the peace of God, a people that clamoureth aloud to be led back to the ways of God, a land parched for rain, swept by gales of wind and pestilences, bewailing the lost favour of God, and the Holy Church devastated that standeth between God and the realm. The Queen listened to her as if, having made her stipulations, she had no more personal interest in the matter and were listening to the tale of a journey.
Speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem, and cry unto her, that her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is pardoned: for she hath received of the Lord's hand double for all her sins. The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.
The Hebrew hath it, “Thy brother’s blood,” which is well expounded both by the Chaldee Paraphrase and the Jerusalem Targum, the voice of the blood of all the generations and the righteous people which thy brother should have begotten crieth unto me.
Passion for power: the terrible teacher of great contempt, which preacheth to their face to cities and empires: "Away with thee!" until a voice crieth out of themselves: "Away with ME!" Passion for power: which, however, mounteth alluringly even to the pure and lonesome, and up to self-satisfied elevations, glowing like a love that painteth purple felicities alluringly on earthly heavens.
And if, as we progress in the Divine life, our experience of the delights of communion with God enables us to say with David, 'My soul panteth, or crieth, or, as the margin of our Bibles have, brayeth, 'yea, thirsteth after God, however we may be assaulted by the enemies within and without, we may say with confidence, 'Why art thou disquieted, O my soul? hope thou in God, for I SHALL yet praise him.
My heart's unuttered cry Hath soared beyond the stars and reached Thine ears. Thou knowest ah, Thou knowest! Then what need, Oh, loving God, to tell Thee o'er and o'er. And with persistent iteration plead As one who crieth at some closed door." "That day I went away comforted and strengthened. Do you recollect?" "Yes; but what was your trouble? I do not remember that."
But Isaiah crieth concerning Israel, "Though the number of the sons of Israel be as the sand of the sea, a remnant shall be saved: for he will finish the account, and cut it short in righteousness: because a concise account will the Lord make on the earth."
He seeth the knight at the head of the bridge, all armed under a tree. Thitherward cometh Lancelot full speed. The knight seeth him coming, and crieth to him. "Sir Knight," saith he, "What demand you? Come you hither to do me evil?" "Yea," saith Lancelot, "for that evil are you fain to do to this castle; wherefore on behalf of the Vavasour and his daughters do I defy you."
They come together a full career and break their lances on their shields, and Messire Gawain hurtleth against the horse and passeth beyond and overthroweth him and his horse together. Then draweth he his sword and runneth upon him. And the knight crieth out: "Hold, Messire Gawain! Are you minded to slay me?
'Tis a great thing to be weak, I trow: ye can do your worst, yet shall none punish you; ye may steal a man's weapons in the hour of need, yet may the man not take his own again; y' are weak, forsooth! Nay, then, if one cometh charging at you with a lance, and crieth he is weak, ye must let him pierce your body through! Tut! fool words!" "And yet ye beat me not," returned Matcham.
