In regard to the manners of the Persians, and the state of the kingdom, I shall mention what I know of these subjects as occasion may offer during the recital of my travels; but I do not think it proper to weary my readers with any lengthened detail. Journey of Contarini from Persia, through Georgia and Mingrelia, to the city Phasis.
The latter uttered a low exclamation of surprise. "What is this?" he asked. "The token," answered Zorzi. He had scarcely spoken when he felt Contarini's arms round him, holding him fast. He was wise enough to make no attempt to escape from them. "Friends," said Contarini quickly, "the man who just came in is a spy. I am holding him. Help me!"
"I mean you to marry Contarini," he cried out, with a stamp of the foot. "And you mean never to see Paolo Godi's manuscript again," suggested Marietta quietly. "Perdition take the accursed thing!" roared the old man. "If I only knew where you have put it " "It is where you can never, never find it," Marietta answered. "So it is of no use to be angry with me, is it?
That was what Vito would have said. And he would have said, "Give me back the gold things I gave your daughter, and let me go and find a wife who does not run about the city." And it would have been well said. Did Marietta suppose that an educated person like the lord Jacopo Contarini would be less particular about his bride's manners than that good soul Vito? Not that Vito had been ignorant.
He would have a far better chance of serving Marietta in the future if he obeyed his master and delivered his message exactly; for he should see Contarini himself and judge of him, in the first place, and that alone was worth much, and afterwards there would be time enough for desperate resolutions.
He was a relative of the Doge Andrea Contarini, and had been employed not only as an officer in the navy, but as a military engineer and as a diplomatist, and in each capacity had shown equal talent. He was connected with the Polani family, and was at their house several times before he sailed.
Andrea Cornaro hath never been one to keep himself at rest in his palace at San Cassiano, and through his wandering hath come this royal alliance for Venice; and to-morrow he goeth again to Cyprus as auditor to the young queen, his niece. The Contarini, the Giustiniani as thou knowest well have already vast holdings on those Mediterranean shores."
"It was unholy speech," said Dama Margherita crossing herself, "which had not been, save for the Consiglière: it hath no shade of truth; may the Holy Madonna forgive him and us, who have listened to slander." "Cara Dama Margherita," said the little Contarini consolingly, "if we have listened it is not with our hearts!"
"You think it's possible then, to get out of a place like this, simply by thinking about it?" Contarini nodded. "Why not? Did not the saints do so? And what was that? Contemplation of the Eternal, my comrade; contemplation of the Eternal." Broom held back a grin. "Then why, my Venetian friend, have you not left this place long since?" "I try," Contarini had said simply, "but I cannot do it.
Many a risk he had run, and more than once in winter he had slipped down the rope with haste to let himself gently into the icy water, and he had swum far down the dark canal to a landing-place. For he was a man of iron. So it came about that Jacopo Contarini lived in a fool's paradise, in which he was not only the chief fool himself, but was moreover in bodily danger more often than he knew.
