Towards its southern boundaries the huanacu and the deer Cervus campestris in large herds range at large, while the pools and marshes are inhabited by enormous flocks of wild fowl of all descriptions.

Of the indigenous mammalia, the only one now left of any size, which is common, is the Cervus campestris. This deer is exceedingly abundant, often in small herds, throughout the countries bordering the Plata and in Northern Patagonia. If a person crawling close along the ground, slowly advances towards a herd, the deer frequently, out of curiosity, approach to reconnoitre him.

The hunter-naturalist, who had some years before made a journey to Oregon, and of course had become well acquainted with the habits of the Cervus leucurus, gave us a full account of them, and related a stirring adventure that had befallen him while hunting "long-tails" upon the Columbia. "The long-tailed deer," began he, "is one of the smallest of the deer kind.

I have had frequent opportunities of observing the young, from one to three days old, of the Cervus campestris the common deer of the pampas, and the perfection of its instincts at that tender age seem very wonderful in a ruminant.

Patrick on his arrival in Ireland; but as the ancient Feni were idolaters, the hero bears but little goodwill to the saint. The last is in verse and is much the best. St. Patrick, who takes part in it, regards Niam as "a demon thing." The latter thinks the hero identical with Taliessin, as well as with Ossian, and says that the word Ossin means "a little fawn," from "os," "cervus."

When proceeding towards them they came upon the dead carcass of a deer. It was a large species, the Cervus antisensis, but, as it had evidently been dead several days, it was swollen out to twice its original size, as is always the case with carcasses of animals left exposed in a warm climate. It was odd that some preying animals had not eaten it up.

For the Cervus alces of N. America, see 'Land and Water, 1868, pp. 221 and 254; and for the C. Virginianus and strongyloceros of the same continent, see J.D. Caton, in 'Ottawa Acad. of Nat. Sc. 1868, p. 13. For Cervus Eldi of Pegu, see Lieut.

The venado of Cubagua belongs to one of those numerous species of small American deer, which zoologists have long confounded under the vague name of Cervus mexicanus. It does not appear to be the same as the hind of the savannahs of Cayenne, or the guazuti of Paraguay, which live also in herds. Its colour is a brownish red on the back, and white under the belly; and it is spotted like the axis.

Ceriornis Temminckii, swelling of the wattles of the male during courtship. Cervulus, weapons of. Cervulus moschatus, rudimentary horns of the female. Cervus alces. Cervus campestris, odour of. Cervus canadensis, traces of horns in the female; attacking a man; sexual difference in the colour of. Cervus elaphus, battles of male; horns of, with numerous points; long hairs on the throat of.

Naturalists have given not a few of their designations, as Cervus Canadensis, Cervus major, Cervus alces, Cervus strongylocerus, etcetera. "You may ask, Why so many names? I shall tell you. It is called `elk' because it was supposed by the early colonists to be the same as the elk of Europe.
