As for magic, necromancy, pyromancy, geomancy, coscinomancy, and all the other mancies there was then a whole literature about them. Everyone, almost, believed in magic.

In this pernicious class were many Aristotelians, such as Pomponatius; many philosophers and wits, such as Bodin, Rabelais, Montaigne; many Italians, as Leo X., Bembo, Bruno. Miracle-evidence began to fall into discredit during the eleventh and twelfth centuries.

Bodin had defined sovereignty as residing in the supreme legislative authority, without further inquiry as to the source or seat of that authority, though he admits the vague position which even Lewis XIV. did not deny, that the object of political society is the greatest good of every citizen or the whole state.
