Florence assents, with a grateful smile. 'Miss Dombey, says Mr Toots, 'beg your pardon, but if you would like to walk to Blimber's, I I'm going there. Florence puts her arm in that of Mr Toots without a word, and they walk away together, with Diogenes going on before.
I can only say the game that was going on, previously to bed, in the large covered play room, with bare feet and in shirt sleeves, was enough to provoke the envy of any member of a Dr. Blimber's "Establishment."
Paul grows more and more Old-fashioned, and goes Home for the Holidays When the Midsummer vacation approached, no indecent manifestations of joy were exhibited by the leaden-eyed young gentlemen assembled at Doctor Blimber's. Any such violent expression as 'breaking up, would have been quite inapplicable to that polite establishment.
They swam before him, as he looked, and next moment he was in the dark coach outside holding close to Florence. From that time, whenever he thought of Doctor Blimber's it came back as he had seen it in this last view; and it never seemed a real place again, but always a dream, full of eyes.
Dombey therefore decided to remove him, not from Brighton, but to Doctor Blimber's educational establishment. "I fear," said Mr. Dombey, addressing Mrs. Pipchin, "that my son in his studies is behind many children of his age. Now instead of being behind his peers, my son ought to be before them far before them. There is an eminence ready for him to mount upon.
He liked him for it. He was not afraid. The people round him changed as unaccountably as on that first night at Doctor Blimber's except Florence; Florence never changed and what had been Sir Parker Peps, was now his father, sitting with his head upon his hand.
'It is beautiful weather, replied Florence. 'It agrees with me! said Mr Toots. 'I don't think I ever was so well as I find myself at present, I'm obliged to you. After stating this curious and unexpected fact, Mr Toots fell into a deep well of silence. 'You have left Dr Blimber's, I think? said Florence, trying to help him out. 'I should hope so, returned Mr Toots. And tumbled in again.
As to Mr Feeder, B.A., Doctor Blimber's assistant, he was a kind of human barrel-organ, with a little list of tunes at which he was continually working, over and over again, without any variation.
Paul now slipped away from the cushioned corner of a sofa, which had been his post of observation, and went downstairs into the tea-room to be ready for Florence, whom he had not seen for nearly a fortnight, as he had remained at Doctor Blimber's on the previous Saturday and Sunday, lest he should take cold. 'But what is the matter, Floy? asked Paul, almost sure that he saw a tear there.
'Upon my word and honour, said Mr Toots, earnestly, 'I should be very much obliged to you if you'd improve my acquaintance I should like to know you, Captain, very much. I really am In want of a friend, I am. Little Dombey was my friend at old Blimber's, and would have been now, if he'd have lived.
