Croll contends; there was surely one; and the conception of such a period is one of the very few ideas of our century that no previous century had even so much as faintly adumbrated. But, for that matter, the entire subject of historical geology is one that had but the barest beginning before our century.

The Source from which it derives its inspiration is no one less than Bahá’u’lláh Himself.... The central, the underlying aim which animates it is the establishment of the New World Order as adumbrated by Bahá’u’lláh. The methods it employs, the standard it inculcates, incline it to neither East nor West, neither Jew nor Gentile, neither rich nor poor, neither white nor colored.

This organism is the universal rule, the common restriction, the rising level platform on which individualities stand. The World State in this ideal presents itself as the sole landowner of the earth, with the great local governments I have adumbrated, the local municipalities, holding, as it were, feudally under it as landlords.

But the colours of New York are exactly in that key; and might be adumbrated by phrases like raw pink or raw yellow. It is really in a sense like something uncooked; or something which the satiric would call half-baked. And yet the effect is not only beautiful, it is even delicate.

The accurate investigation of the lowest forms of animal life, commenced by Leeuwenhoek and Swammerdam, and continued by the remarkable labours of Reaumur, Trembley, Bonnet, and a host of other observers, in the latter part of the seventeenth and the first half of the eighteenth centuries, drew the attention of biologists to the gradation in the complexity of organisation which is presented by living beings, and culminated in the doctrine of the "echelle des etres," so powerfully and clearly stated by Bonnet; and, before him, adumbrated by Locke and by Leibnitz.

It is to these that his most modern admirers devote their main attention particularly to his letters and his autobiographies; but they are all of them highly characteristic of their author, and whatever the subject may be, from a guide to Rome to a life of Napoleon one gathers in them, scattered up and down through their pages, a curious, dimly adumbrated philosophy an ill-defined and yet intensely personal point of view le Beylisme.

The unrevealed and the unrevealable is the soul itself that in such works is dimly adumbrated.

Letter XXXVI gives opportunity for some discerning remarks on French taxation. The fragment known as Smollett's Dying Prophecy of 1771 has often been discredited. Yet the substance of it is fairly adumbrated here in the passage beginning, "There are undoubtedly many marks of relaxation in the reins of French government," written fully six years previously.

It also adumbrated an Ulster Committee, which had been an unpopular suggestion when put forward in the presentation stages. On the other hand, it offered great material inducements in the proposed expenditure for land purchase and for housing.
