Eitel, p. 64. The bhikshunis are the female monks or nuns, subject to the same rules as the bhikshus, and also to special ordinances of restraint. See Hardy's E. M., chap. 17. The Sramaneras are the novices, male or female, who have vowed to observe the Shikshapada, or ten commandments. Fa-Hsien was himself one of them from his childhood.

Rodney, therefore, contented himself with reversing the order of sailing, putting Hood in the rear, whereby he was able to refit, and yet follow fast enough not to be out of supporting distance. This circumstance caused Hood's division to be in the rear in the battle of the 12th. One of the French ships, the Caton, 64, had been so injured that de Grasse detached her into Guadeloupe.

There appear'd to be an open clear passage between these Islands extending from North 64 degrees East to East by North. Sweeping is dragging the middle of a rope, or hawser, held at the two ends from two boats some distance apart, along the bottom, with the object of catching the fluke of the anchor as it lies on the bottom, and so recovering it.

On the 11th of January, 1823, Captain Benjamin Morrell, of the American schooner Wasp, sailed from Kerguelen's Land with a view of penetrating as far south as possible. On the first of February he found himself in latitude 64 degrees 52' S., longitude 118 degrees 27' E. The following passage is extracted from his journal of that date.

The bustling bishop of Jaen acted as pioneer to mark the route and superintend the laborers, and the grand cardinal took care that the work should never languish through lack of means.* * Zurita, Anales de Aragon, lib. 20, c. 64; Pulgar, part 3, cap. 51.

Here is a comparison of the two ships: North Delaware Dakota Fastest run over measured mile......... 21.98 22.25 Average of five high runs.............. 21.44 21.83 Full power trial speed................. 21.56 21.64 Full power trial horsepower............ 28,600. 31,400. With such evidence before us, the seaworthiness of boats of the Nos. 63 and 64 type may be seriously questioned. Weyl emphasizes the facts that "practice has shown that boats of No. 61 type cannot make headway in a heavy sea, and that it is then often impossible to open their torpedo tubes.

And now, leaving all figures and their "sum totals," I feel sure a few genuine memoranda of such things some cases jotted down '64, '65, and '66 made at the time and on the spot, with all the associations of those scenes and places brought back, will not only go directest to the right spot, but give a clearer and more actual sight of that period, than anything else.

On the 20th of December he left Acheen for the Coromandel coast, having shortened his stay to the eastward for reasons of policy. On the 8th of January, 1783, he was off Ganjam, on the Orissa coast, and thence reached Trincomalee again on the 23d of February. There he was joined on the 10th of March by three ships of the line from Europe: two 74's and one 64.

Take only a single jurisdiction, that of the Dean of York's Peculiar, between the years 1592-1601, and a number will be found. Cosen, An Apologie, etc., 64. As has been above stated, an excommunicate could not attend service. P. 47 supra. According to 23 Eliz. c. i, sec. 4 and sec. 6. See A.P.C., xiii, 271-2 . Cardwell, Doc. P. 19, note 33, supra.
