In the year of grace 1140 a German army, under Conrad III., emperor, laid siege to the small town of Weinsberg, the garrison of which resisted with a most truculent and disloyal obstinacy.
Ariwara being a grandson of the Emperor Saga, a member of the Saga Genji received the nomination of chief commissioner; but in the year 1140, the minister of the Right, Masasada, a member of the Murakami Genji, was appointed to the office, and thenceforth it remained in the hands of that house.
Strong is the trace of the development from the Romanesque façade, completed in 1140, to pure Gothic construction of a century later.

At present the cathedral is a regular cruciform structure of Norman character, remarkable for the solidity of its construction. It was commenced 1117, by John de Saiz, a Norman. The great transept and a portion of the central tower were built by Abbot William de Vaudeville, A.D. 1160 to 1175, and the nave by Abbot Benedict 1177-1193.
