The fifth eclogue, 'of the disputation of Citizens and men of the Countrey, or the Cytezen and Uplondyshman, as it was originally styled, again presents us with a familiar theme treated in the conventional manner, and closes the series.

The Annees de Pelerinage received much attention. Among the pieces played were, Les Cloches, Chasse Neige, Eclogue, Cloches de Geneva, Eroica, Feux Follets and Mazeppa.

Having thus gradually altered the literary form of the eclogue, this tendency towards dramatic expression next showed itself in the manner in which the poem was presented to the world. For circulation in print or manuscript, or for informal reading, came to be substituted recitation in character.

We need not then concern ourselves in a Vergilian biography with the tale that Arrius or Clodius or Claudius or Milienus Toro chased the poet into a coal-bin or ducked him into the river. The shepherds of the poem are typical characters made to pass through the typical experiences of times of distress. The first Eclogue, Tityre tu, is even more general than the ninth in its application.

They were chiefly to be seen in old-fashioned country churches, such as that where, in Gay's eclogue, the village swains followed fair Blouzelind to her burial, and listened while the good man warned them from his text, and descanted upon the uncertainty of life And spoke the hour-glass in her praise quite out.

The pastoral scenery seldom, except in the ninth Eclogue, pretends to be Mantuan. Even where, as in the first, the poem is intended to convey a personal expression of gratitude for Vergil's exemption from harsh evictions, the poet is very careful not to obtrude a picture of himself or his own circumstances.

He, indeed, appeared at the annual exhibition, to the prodigious exultation of all his relatives, a farmer’s family in the vicinity, and repeated the whole of the first eclogue from memory, observing the intonations of the dialogue with much judgment and effect. The sounds, as they proceeded from his mouth, of “Titty-ree too patty-lee ree-coo-bans sub teg-mi-nee faa-gy

Or again, in the tenth Eclogue, where the masque of shepherds and gods passes before the sick lover, it is through the same strange and golden air that they seem to move, and the heavy lilies of Silvanus droop in the stillness of the same unearthly day. Seven years following on the publication of the Eclogues were spent by Virgil on the composition of the Georgics.

For the 'March' Spenser recasts in English surroundings Bion's fantasy of the fight with Cupid, without however achieving any conspicuous success. In the April eclogue Hobbinol recites to the admiring Thenot Colin's lay

Yet, when I stopped my horse to talk to her I had not forgotten that "the courtesy of shepherds" demands that one should always exchange words with the folk of the lonely trade I found myself unconsciously dropping into the language of pastoral verse. Does not the Third Eclogue of Virgil begin: "Die mihi, ... ? An Melibei?" At any rate, I began: "Whose flock is this?"
