This is a law for which, in all truth, men should be grateful. The practice of suicide by disembowelling is of great antiquity. In old days the ceremony of hara-kiri used to be performed in a temple.

The Samurai, or gentleman of the military class, from his earliest years learns to look upon the hara-kiri as a ceremony in which some day he may be called upon to play a part as principal or second.
Scratch the Japanese, they in effect say, and beneath his veneer of civilisation you will find the barbarian, barbarism and Orientalism being with these persons synonymous terms. And if any incredulity in the matter be expressed they will triumphantly point to the recurrence of hara-kiri among the soldiers and sailors in the late war.

The sword then had innumerable functions, and, like almost every article of utility in Japan, it became the subject of elaborate ornamentation.
