Well; each of the races has some function to fulfil. And it is not modern India that has done this; she has not done it of her own good will, has had no good will to do it. It is the Akbars the Anquetil Duperrons and Sir William Joneses, and above all, and far above all, H. P. Blavatsky, whom we have to thank. So much, then, for the age of the Vedic literature.

Food that is good and that has been acquired lawfully, should be given, with a cheerful heart, unto such Brahmanas as are possessed of Vedic lore. That man has never to take birth in an intermediate order, whose food, given with a cheerful heart is taken by a thousand Brahmanas.

Hence it is that I am called the excellent Vrisha in the Vedic lexicon called Nighantuka. The word 'Kapi' signifies the foremost of boars, and Dharma is otherwise known by the name of Vrisha. It is for this reason that that lord of all creatures, viz., Kasyapa, the common sire of the deities and the Asuras, called me by the name Vrishakapi.

In the Vedic period there were several orders of sacrifice the hymns of the Rigveda have to do with the Soma-sacrifice alone and several kinds of priests, and it stands to reason that an elaborate ritual derived from a distant age and cherished by a priestly caste which was growing in power, could not quickly change.

That personal beauty and youth and prosperity do not succeed in overwhelming thee is due to good luck. This favour done to thee is due to the kindness of the deities. Following them I applaud gift. Thou praisest penances and Vedic lore. Penances are sacred. Penances are the means by which one may acquire the Vedas and heaven also.

The language of the Vedic hymns had ceased to be understood by the masses, and its interpretation became the monopoly of learned families; and this monopoly, like all others, was used by those who enjoyed it for their own aggrandisement. The language that had passed out of common usage acquired an added sanctity.

Nor can we admit the assertion that Scripture teaches the cessation of avidya to spring only from the cognition of a Brahman devoid of all difference. Up. Up. For the reason that Brahman is characterised by difference all Vedic texts declare that final release results from the cognition of a qualified Brahman.

If, however, people do not righteously lead their lives, the world becometh lawless, in consequence of the want of Vedic merit and government. The religion of the Brahmanas consisteth in the knowledge of the soul and the hue of that order alone is universally the same. Officiating at sacrifices, teaching and the acceptance of gifts are the duties of a Brahmana.

There is some entity higher than the Brahman described so far as being the cause of the world and possessing the twofold characteristics. Up. And the term 'setu' means in ordinary language that which enables one to reach the other bank of a river; and from this we conclude that in the Vedic text also there must be meant something to be reached.

Qaurva and Naonhaitya were also Vedic deities turned into devils. It is difficult to assign them any distinct sphere. Taric and Zaric, "Darkness" and "Poison," had no doubt occupations corresponding with their names. Placed between the two contending worlds of good and evil, man's position was one of extreme danger and difficulty.
