An apartment above is known as the "Dog Whipper's" room, a relic of those days when an official was appointed whose duty it was to keep stray dogs out of the sacred building. On the exterior of the clerestory wall immediately above the porch is a projection which marks the Minstrels' Gallery, and is lighted by a window.

"Not by a drum sight! Who says so?" I handed him Whipper's note. "Are you going there?" he asked. I said I was. "I'll go with you." This suited me. We saw no look of surprise on Whipper's face. I went straight to the point. "I can't sell the rifles at $4.60, Mr. Whipper, unless I know some one else has quoted that price; if they have, I'll meet it."

But I want to sell you." "To be sure; to be sure!" He said this as a man might humor a child, and as if he fully understood all that was in my mind. "Tom, do we need any bull-dogs?" "No, sir; got 50 on the way from Reachum at $2.70." I probably looked as disappointed as I felt, for Whipper's voice took on a very sympathetic tone. "You could not touch $2.70?" he asked. "No, sir."

He cites other examples in Norfolk parishes, viz., "Constable Acre" in Stuston, "Constable Pasture" in Fralingham, "Dog Whipper's Land" in Barton Turf. Cf. In an early year temp. Hist. MSS. Com. Rep., v, Pt. i , 596a. See also Shrop. Arch. and Nat. Hist. E. Freshfield, St. E.g., St. St. Thos. Examples among many are the Edenbridge, Kent, lands. These bridgewardens held lands in three parishes.

"Just scratch them off," said he, as calm as a day in June. "But has any one given you such a figure?" "Ask me no questions, and I'll tell you no lies. If I can get them at $4.60 I will take them." I could get nothing more out of him and we started back. On the way we met Tom, Whipper's book-keeper. I asked him what it meant.

A dozen rods up the path Neil turned into a dense thicket of briars and underbrush and for ten minutes they plunged through the pathless jungle. Now and then Nathaniel saw the three red stripes of the whipper's lash upon the bare shoulders of the man ahead and to these every step seemed to add new wounds made by the thorns.
