His very deficiencies were all in his favour. Had he been a man of a more poetical temperament he might have been tempted, like Platonists and neo-Platonists, to soar into the heights of metaphysical speculations and either lose himself or at least render it difficult for ordinary readers to follow him. But no one can ever complain that Dr. Waterland is obscure.

"that it should not be lawful for any man to publish or compose another Faith or Creed than that which was defined by the Nicene Council." 'In initio'. It would be no easy matter to find a tolerably competent individual who more venerates the writings of Waterland than I do, and long have done.

Waterland, why did not his great predecessor in this glorious controversy, Bishop Bull, contend for a revisal of our established version of the Bible, but especially of the New Testament?

It was Justin's business to shew that there was a divine Person, one who was God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and was not the Father; and therefore there were two divine Persons. At all events, it was a very incautious expression on the part of Justin, though his meaning was, doubtless, that which Waterland gives.

For a year he read the Anglican divines Jeremy Taylor, Hooker, Butler, Waterland, Pearson, and Pusey and when the time came for his ordination his uncle, the Earl of Erin, who was now Prime Minister, obtained him a title to a curacy under the popular and influential Canon Wealthy of All Saints, Belgravia.

But the "Oldfield Arms" was not long without a tenant. The rector took it, as we have before said, and used it partly as shops, and the large public room as a reading-room. And thus it was that the "Dun Cow" remained without a rival as the dispenser of strong drink to the inhabitants of Waterland.

In one morning he had heard of the revolt of Enkbuizen and of the whole Waterland; two hours later came the news of the Valenciennes rebellion, and next day the astonishing capture of Mons. One disaster followed hard upon another.

This eulogium induced me to make some inquiries as to this favored spot in the course of a sojourn at the city of Amsterdam, and the information I procured fully justified the enthusiastic praises I had heard. The village of Broek is situated in Waterland, in the midst of the greenest and richest pastures of Holland, I may say, of Europe.

When Bernard Oliphant first came to Waterland, he found the "Oldfield Arms" doing a most excellent business; so far as that can be an excellent business which builds the prosperity of one upon the ruin of hundreds.

Waterland could not digest your exposition, or acquit it of Tritheism, little hope is there of finding the Unitarians more persuadable. Ib. p. 154.
