At the present day, innumerable plants and free plant cells are known to pass the whole or part of their lives in an actively locomotive condition, in no wise distinguishable from that of one of the simpler animals; and, while in this condition, their movements are, to all appearance, as spontaneous as much the product of volition as those of such animals.
But I could not get a bid, and so I shifted along down-town Madison Square, Union Square, then westward by Jefferson Market and West Tenth Street. Orders given in his name, but not originating in his will, had caused this. His attitude became fatalistic he was being moved about by a ruthless hand without regard to his own volition.
But natural selection is a physical, external, objective process. It is carried out without the individual's volition: he is not aiming at the end. It is simply natural law which, with many varieties of living beings before it, exterminates the unfit individuals.
