This "no notion" may generally be traced to bad management, to stuffing him with food, and thus giving him a disinclination to take the nipple at all. How often should a mother suckle her infant? A mother generally suckles her baby too often, having him almost constantly at the breast. This practice is injurious both to parent and to child.
They understand that a man of forty, father of three children, has other needs than a young man of twenty. They know that the woman who suckles her infant and spends sleepless nights at its bedside, cannot do as much work as the man who has slept peacefully.
As has been said of Dürer's Madonna, and the description applies equally well to many others in the North, "She suckles her son with a calm feeling of happiness; she gazes upon him with admiration as he lies upon her lap; she caresses him and presses him to her bosom without a thought whether it is becoming to her, or whether she is being admired."
"The sloth suckles its young like other quadrupeds," observed our friend; "and I have often seen the female, with her little one clinging to her, moving at a rate through the forest which shows that the sloth does not properly deserve its name. See now give a shout and then say if it is too sluggish to more." John and I shouted together, and True barked loudly.
When the mother's nipples are of the normal size and well formed, the healthy infant instinctively suckles at once when placed at the breast, but sometimes it has to be taught; by squeezing out a few drops of milk to wet the nipple, the child will usually take hold, or a little sugar and water may be put on the nipple; a little patience and tact are all that is necessary to insure success.
96 Queen Street, London. 114 Fifth Avenue, New York. by Neely's Primatic Library Cloth, 50 Cents "This is a modern, up-to-date "society" novel with considerable local coloring and many pictures of life in the "hupper suckles." It describes the career and love experiences of one who eventually becomes Viscountess Landale.
"You will scarcely praps reckonize in this little skitch* the haltered linimints of 1, with woos face the reders of your valluble mislny were once fimiliar, the unfortnt Jeames de la Pluche, fomly so selabrated in the fashnabble suckles, now the pore Jeames Plush, landlord of the 'Wheel of Fortune' public house.
The creature of which we were in search is amphibious, and suckles its young like the whale. It is frequently found in pairs with its young, browsing on the marine plants, and sometimes on shore in the cocoanut groves. It is properly called the "manatee," or seacow; measures fifteen feet in length, has two fin-like arms, is covered with hair, and often weighs twelve hundred pounds.
It ranks under the 'class' MAMMALIA, because it has teats, by which the female suckles her young; the 'tribe' UNGUICULATA, because its extremities are armed with nails; the 'order' DIGITIGRADES, because it walks principally on its toes.
A similar, but still stronger, argument may be based upon the existence of teats, and even functional mammary glands, in male mammals. Numerous cases of "Gynaecomasty," or functionally active breasts in men, are on record, though there is no mammalian species whatever in which the male normally suckles the young.
