"Yes, sir; pray what name shall I say?" I looked at the man's face astonished. What name? what name? aye, that is the question. What is my name? I had no more idea who I was than if I had never existed. I did not know whether I was a dissenter or a layman. I felt as dull as Sternhold and Hopkins. At last, to my great relief, it flashed across me that I was Sydney Smith.
Sternhold was educated at Oxford; was Groom of the Robes to Henry VIII. and Edward VI., was a "bold and busy Calvinist," and died in 1549. The little of interest told of John Hopkins is that he was a minister and schoolmaster, and that he assisted the work of Sternhold.
"Well, I think she's married, and changed her name, but she's 'ere right enough. Tell 'er I won't keep 'er a minute. I'm 'er old father!" In "Still Waters Run Deep" I was rather good as Mrs. Mildmay, and the rest of the cast were admirable. Mrs. Wigan was, of course, Mrs. Sternhold.
We should go on fighting with the rest of the world forever, if the ministers had not taken to fight among themselves." "As for Sternhold," said the earl, "'t is a vulgar dog, and voted for economical reform.
"Raffden and Sternhold go out in favour of Baldwin and Charlton, and in the hope that you will lend your aid to " "I!" said Lord Mauleverer, very angrily, "I lend my aid to Baldwin, the Jacobin, and Charlton, the son of a brewer!" "Very true!" continued Brandon.
It would perhaps be neither just nor conducive to proper judgment to gather only a florilege of noble verses from Sternhold and Hopkins' Version and point out none of the "weedy-trophies," the quaint and even uncouth lines which disfigure the work.
The praise which Sternhold received for his pious rhymes had the same effect upon him as did similar encomiums upon his predecessor, the French psalm-writer Marot, it encouraged him to write more psalm-verses. The second edition was printed in 1549, and contained thirty-seven psalms by Sternhold and seven by Hopkins.
"Mark me," whispered Old Zeb Minards, crowder and leader of the musicians, sitting back at the end of the Psalms, and eyeing his fiddle dubiously; "If Sternhold be sober this morning, Hopkins be drunk as a fly, or 'tis t'other way round." "'Twas middlin' wambly," assented Calvin Oke, the second fiddle a screw-faced man tightly wound about the throat with a yellow kerchief.
The first edition contained nineteen psalms only, which were all versified by Sternhold. It was published in 1548 or 1549, under this title, "Certayn Psalmes chosen out of the Psalter of Daid and drawen into English Metre by Thomas Sternhold Groom of ye Kynges Maiesties Roobes." I believe no copy of this edition is now known to exist.
"You consent then to the expulsion of Sternhold and Raffden? for, after all, that is the question. Our British vessel, as the d -d metaphor-mongers call the State, carries the public good safe in the hold like brandy; and it is only when fear, storm, or the devil makes the rogues quarrel among themselves and break up the casks, that one gets above a thimbleful at a time.
