Specialism at the bar, or by the bedside, leads to perfection and attains results. The great doctor is the great surgeon or the great prescriptionist he cannot be great in both and the great lawyer is rarely great, if ever, as counselor and orator. The great editor is by no means the great writer. But he ought to be able to write and must be a judge of writing.
Now there is hardly a portion of the body to which practitioners who make its ailments a specialty do not direct their searching methods of examination or on which they do not practise their ingenious devices in the way of treatment. Specialism has always been decried by a large section of the medical profession. On the other hand, it has been and is still overrated by the laity.

Indeed, it is an accepted truism that the man who starts as a general collector invariably makes the best specialist in the end.
It has decided, rightly or wrongly, that this specialism and this universalism shall be divided between the sexes. Cleverness shall be left for men and wisdom for women. For cleverness kills wisdom; that is one of the few sad and certain things. It must have melted in the frightful furnaces of ambition and eager technicality.
When Minna inquired how it was that Seraphitus could read the souls of men, the answer was: "I have the gift of Specialism. Specialism is an inward sight that can penetrate all things; you will understand its full meaning only through comparison.
