Men were spading and planting the vegetable gardens, painting or white-washing fences. All was stir and bustle, and tired folk excused themselves if they nodded in church on Sunday. Cynthia made pilgrimages to the Flying Star that had been her home for so long. The storm had wrought great havoc with some of the shipping, and big boys were out gathering driftwood.
And after Jerome had done this the phenomena had occurred in the library, not in the dining-room. "By Jove!" ejaculated General Hume, as I pointed this out. "This may be something more, you know, that mere coincidence!" Sir Henry said nothing, but continued his spading. He paid attention to nothing save the heap that Jerome had formed.
The Germans were as busy as beavers dam-building. They had a lot of work to do before they had their new defences right. We heard them driving stakes and spading; we heard their voices with snatches of sentences intelligible, and occasionally the energetic, shouted, guttural commands of their officers. All through that night I never heard a British officer speak above a conversational tone.
"Here's one that's me!" exclaimed Mary Jane suddenly. She knew a very few words and her own name was one of them. "I thought you would find that," said Mr. Merrill, "so I bought that on purpose for you. It's Marygold and you may have it in your bed, if you like." By that time the earth in her garden was turned and Mary Jane set to work spading and hoeing just as hard as ever she could.
Plowing or spading, especially if done in late autumn, exposes the mould to the beneficial action of the air and frost, and the garden gradually takes on the refined, mellow, fertile character which distinguishes it from the ordinary field. In dealing with a thin, sandy soil, one has almost to reverse the principles just given. Yet there is no cause for discouragement.
To accomplish this no hand tool surpasses the spading fork. One other method is, however, superior especially when practiced upon the heavier soils fall plowing or digging. In practicing this method care should be taken to plow late when the soil, moistened by autumn rains, will naturally come up in big lumps. These lumps must be left undisturbed during the winter for frost to act upon.
