The bacteriological analysis made every week when the supply was first opened now once a month showed the water to be perfectly pure. Water for washing purposes is plentiful. Hot and cold shower-baths are installed throughout the camp. The prisoners are obliged to use them once a week, but may, if they choose, have a bath four times a day. In summer especially the baths are never idle.

"Now, for instance, the water in his shower- bath is tepid." There was an instant's silence before Stover inquired, with ominous restraint: "Who's been monkeying with it?" "It's warm!" "Oh!" It was a sigh of relief. "A man can't get in shape taking warm shower-baths. Warm water weakens a person." "Mebbe you-all will listen to me next time!" again cried Willie, triumphantly.

But I suppose," Mitchell reflected, "he wouldn't feel completely his old self without a lady friend sitting opposite to him. I might fix up a black gin for him, but I suppose he'd draw the colour line. But that's nonsense. "All teamsters and travellers could camp there for one night only. I'd have shower-baths; but I wouldn't force any man to have a bath against his will.

I felt unwell, grew nervous, had a feeling that I could not draw a deep breath, and when I was twenty my physical condition was a violent protest against overwork. One day, while reading Kant's Kritik der Urteilskraft, I felt so weak that I was obliged to go to the doctor. The latter recommended physical exercises and cold shower-baths.

It is well to begin these baths at a temperature of 80° F. and to gradually decrease this until the bath is taken at 70°, which is about the temperature of running water, and the bath should be kept up at this. For most people the best time to take the bath is just before retiring; this bath is not only very strengthening, but also is excellent in cases of insomnia and nervousness. Shower-baths.

I do not know that I derived the slightest benefit from any of these prescriptions, or from any other therapeutic agency, unless I except the good effects for a few days of bitters, and of cold shower-baths from a tank in which ice was floating. The most judicious of the medical gentlemen whose aid I invoked, was, I think, the one who replied to my inquiry for his bill, "What for?

It was rather crowded. I marvelled that nobody was using the shower-baths. I soaped myself, stood beneath the big iron water-pipe and waited, but there was no response. There was a loud laugh, then a miner asked: "Air ye posin' for yer photo, mister?" "No. What's the matter with the water?" "Fits, Buttie it's got fits!" There was plenty of food, of a kind.

And then, suddenly, I wake up, shaken and bathed in perspiration; I light a candle and find that I am alone, and after that crisis, which occurs every night, I at length fall asleep and slumber tranquilly till morning. June 2d. My state has grown worse. What is the matter with me? The bromide does me no good, and the shower-baths have no effect whatever.

I just felt stunned and crushed. Marah was at the taffrail looking out over the water with one hand on the rail. He grinned at me whenever the sprays rose up and crashed down upon us. "Ha," he would say, "there she sprays; that beats your shower-baths," and he would laugh to see me duck whenever a very heavy spray flung itself into the boat.

'You didn't give us enough of a chase, cried Marjorie to him through the streaming pane; then she went off, rather annoyed, to look for the others. They hunted for some time among the outhouses, getting shower-baths of drops from the eaves; but no one was to be found.
