Women were privileged to oppose their senselessness to the divine fire: men could not retreat behind such defences; they must meet him on the common ground of men, where this constant battler had never yet encountered a reverse.
Seems as if we could get on better if we could just get a line on the scheme of things, understand what it is all about, and the why. Or isn't there any why? I like a why for things. It gives them their place. I don't like disorder, and senselessness, and if there isn't any why why then See what I'm getting at?
Indeed, it could not be so, neither the former nor the latter could fail to see the irrationality of their conduct, if the complexity of government organization did not obscure the unnatural senselessness of their actions. So many instigate, assist, or sanction the commission of every one of these actions that no one who has a hand in them feels himself morally responsible for it.
The senselessness of it! The futility! The waste! The mockery of men's faith in God!... Often Palmer and I dear, grave old Palmer, with sphinx-like face and honest soul used to trudge along silently, with just a sigh now and then, or a groan, or a sudden cry of "O God!... O Christ!" It was I, generally, who spoke those words, and Palmer would say: "Yes... and it's going to last a long time yet.
She was steadfast, and she was caparisoned, to obtain and to possess the things that, of her sex, commonly a woman might not have, and she was shutting herself from that which, if it offers, not all the man-owned world can deny the woman lowliest in office, heaviest in chains, deepest in servitude! This was the usual practice of the holy men of God. But, Answ. 2. Take heed that thy heart go to God as well as thy mouth.
And it's me! ... It's my senselessness! ... It's my fault that you've got your proof!" He spoke in a tone of acute distress. "It was your duty to give it me," said Guerchard sternly; and he began to mount the steps. "Shall I come with you? I know where the handkerchief is," said the Duke quickly. "No, thank you, your Grace," said Guerchard. "I prefer to go alone."
Once he broke out with: "Didn't she feed you well enough, or was it just that you didn't know when you were well off?" For he was aware that his patient's fever was rising and, like a good practitioner, he fumed at such useless relapse. The knee had been doing fine. Now there would be the devil to pay with it. The utter senselessness of the proceeding irritated Watson.
He commands without tyranny and imperiousness, obeys without servility, and changes not his mind with his estate. The height of his spirits overlooks all casualties, and his boldness proceeds neither from ignorance nor senselessness; but first he values evils, and then despises them. He is so balanced with wisdom that he floats steadily in the midst of all tempests.
Every believer is bound to answer, he can, and is bound to persuade himself of it. But if reason sets him revolting against this senselessness? Then Shakespeare comes to his aid: 'There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, etc.
