But the one interminable mystery, for I presume the two make but one mystery a mystery that must be a mystery to us for ever, not because God will not explain it, but because God himself could not make us understand it is first, how he can be self-existent, and next, how he can make other beings exist: self-existence and creation no man will ever understand.

God only is self-existent and independent; the most rightful monarchs and established monarchies in the world cannot possibly be supported but by the conjunction of arms and laws, a union so necessary that the one cannot subsist without the other. We may assert that it is self-existent, that it is self-created, or that it is created by an external agency. All three propositions, he proceeds to show, are equally inconceivable.
