I have a hunch that the history books are a poor way of planning a life today and that science-fiction comes a lot closer. There's another thing about science-fiction yarns that is quite conspicuous; it's so difficult to pick out the villains. It might have made quite a change in history if the ballads and tales of the old days had been a little less sure of who the villains were.
Science-fiction was new, in 1930; atomic energy was a dream we believed in, and space-travel was something we tried to understand better. Today, science-fiction has become a broad field, atomic energy despite the feelings of many present adults! is no dream.
It seems to be a convention to use hyperbolic names for science-fiction magazines; a heritage from what might be called an earlier and ruder day. What I do for Astonishing is really hard work, and I enjoy it. I'm working now on one for them, based on J. W. Dunne's time-theories, if you know what they are." "I think so," Rand said. "Polydimensional time, isn't it?
If he was right and the Fuzzies were declared the 9th extrasolar sapient race, there went the Company, charter and all! LITTLE FUZZY is our candidate for the most delightful science-fiction book of the year. by James Blish F-122 40¢ They were beautiful creatures, highly intelligent and playful.

It is the first to portray a battle fought by space craft in the airless void; and possibly the first also to propose the use of sealed suits that enable men to traverse a vacuum. Of the more minor twists of plot initially found here that have since become parts of the "pulp" science-fiction writers' standard stock-in-trade, there are literally too many to mention.
For the imagination of this talented writer supplied a great many of the most basic themes upon which the present superstructure of science-fiction is based.
Even though the audience is sophisticated enough to realize that this science-fiction drama is purely entertainment, the theme is repeated sufficiently in novels, comics, and television to make an indelible impression on the subconscious mind. It's the technique of telling the "big lie" so many times that it becomes believable. We are all influenced by this procedure.
But while these stories don't have the finesse of later work they have a bounding enthusiasm that belongs with a young field, designed for and built by young men. Most of the writers of those early stories were, like myself, college students. For old-timers in science-fiction these are typical of the days when the field was starting. They've got a fine flavor of our own younger enthusiasm.
Anyhow, it's not your space-time, though some say it's your world." "You mean dimensional travel?" Dave asked. He'd seen something about that on a science-fiction television program. It made even time travel seem simple. At any event, however, this wasn't a hospital in any sane and normal section of Canada during his time, on Earth. "Something like that," she agreed doubtfully.
