In the early days, before they had learned the power of the new people who had flocked into the land, they committed many depredations upon Americans, and when remonstrated with were insolent and defiant. So an expedition was sent against them, and large numbers the major portion of the tribe were arrested and moved near Fort Bayard the Bosque Redondo in New Mexico, on the Pecos River.
Together they ascended the great staircase, lined with chatting groups, and ablaze with uniforms, military, naval and diplomatic, British and Portuguese, to be welcomed above by the Count and Countess of Redondo. These Indians, numbering about 830, are at present located not, however, upon a defined reservation secured to them near Fort Stanton, in the eastern part of the Territory, and range generally south of that point. To the north the brush covered all the ridges in a dense thicket, and it was there that the cow camp was hid; but on the southern slope, where the sun had baked out the soil, the mountain side stretched away bare and rocky, broken by innumerable ravines which came together in a redondo or rounded valley and then plunged abruptly into the narrow defile of a box cañon.
