One of these paragraphs tells about a quarrel between the Czar of Russia and his eldest son, twenty-one and a half lines; and the other tells about the atrocious destruction of a peasant child by its parents, forty lines, or one-fifth of the total of the reading-matter contained in the paper.

Thousands who have been put through the paces of what is called 'higher education' may be seen in railway-carriages, at health resorts, or in the public libraries, deeply immersed in cheap-jack reading-matter that no self-respecting person of moderate intelligence would care even to be capable of specifying.

After consultation with my publishers I decided to undertake the work, and with reference to it chiefly I provided myself reading-matter. I have already said that the experiment of writing on board did not succeed. I composed part of the first chapter and then stopped; but the purpose remained, and was resumed very soon after leaving the Chicago, in May, 1895.

In the place of the brilliant sunshine of Assam, the grimy, murky London atmosphere; instead of the distant roars from the jungle, the low thunder of the big "machines" in the basement, as they began to revolve, grinding out fresh reading-matter for the insatiable British public. The memories, however, remain.

They made a point of bringing reading-matter back from town every week, and there were always cards to fall back on, and Waite sang songs for them with natural dramatic talent. Nevertheless, in spite of their contentment, none of them was sorry when the opportunity offered for going to town.

Let us examine it in its three departments already named, its news, editorials, and miscellaneous reading-matter. In particularity and comprehensiveness of news-collecting, it may be admitted that the American newspapers for a time led the world. I mean in the picking-up of local intelligence, and the use of the telegraph to make it general.

Innumerable printing-presses, instead, are turning out a vast quantity of reading-matter, the candidly recognized purpose of which is to kill time, and which it has been asserted, though perhaps too sweepingly ought not to be vended over book-counters, but rather in drugstores along with the other narcotics.

"I was wondering what that was," she laughed. "You haven't been buying me reading-matter?" He nodded, and held the volume so that she could read the title. "'A Friend in Need, by S. Beale. I didn't know you wrote!" she said in surprise. "I am literary and even worse," he said flippantly. "I see you have a shelf of books here. If you will allow me I will put it with the others."

The muscles of the eyes undergo excessive strain in accommodating themselves to the unnatural position. The battered type, wood-pulp paper, and poor presswork, now so commonly used in the cheap editions of books and periodicals, are often injurious to the eyesight. Reading-matter should not be held nearer to the eyes than is necessary to make the print appear perfectly sharp and distinct.
