As the ship sailed on and they came nearer, they saw a lovely island. Mountains, towering peak on peak, with deep green valleys between brown rocky heights hung with vines, and the great ocean breakers booming in one white line of foaming surf on the reef of living coral, made it look like a vision of fairyland. They had discovered Rarotonga. But what of the people of the island?
Two missionaries from Rarotonga are believed to have been on it at the time of its disappearance, and to have shared its mysterious fate. Thursday, December 7th. At eight o'clock I took Mabelle and Muriel for a drive in a pony-carriage which had been kindly lent me, but with a hint that the horse was rather méchant sometimes.
Williams was not destined to see the unfortunate conclusion. From the long drought, the island presented in many places a parched look, and lacked that luxuriance of vegetation to which we had been so long accustomed on Rarotonga. At the forenoon meeting on Sunday there were nearly two hundred present. Mr.

The islands of the Pacific Ocean were the principal scene of his labours more particularly Huahine in Tahiti, Raiatea, and Rarotonga. Like the Apostles he worked with his hands, at blacksmith work, gardening, shipbuilding; and he endeavoured to teach the islanders the art of civilised life, at the same time that he instructed them in the truths of religion.
Rarotonga, one of the Hervey group, about seven hundred miles south of Tahiti, and discovered by Williams, in 1823, when the people were in the most savage condition, is now the chief missionary station in the Pacific.
