A pretty bungle we have made of it! Instead of curing the original defect, we have produced a second. Had we asked an artisan practised in 'planishing, as it is called, he would have told us that no good was to be done, but only mischief, by hitting down on the projecting part.
For planishing pipes or tubes a long wrought iron mandrel is provided mounted on two cast iron carriages, each having four flanged wheels for running on rails. The hammer is arranged so that tubes 4 feet in diameter can be worked for planishing plates. A pallet is fastened on the top of one of the mandrel carriages, Figs. 5 to 8 showing the details of the carriages.
Upon close inspection we cannot fail to notice a striking peculiarity upon the surface; the roughness is very remarkable; the planishing hammer has left amazingly visible indications of its busy work. One would suppose the manufacturer intended the surface of the plate to represent the undulations of the sea, instead of that smooth and level character so strongly recommended by M. Daguerre.
The small planishing hammer, Figs. 1 to 3, next page, is used for copper, tin, electro, and iron plate, for scythes, and other thin work, for which it is sufficient to adjust the force of the blow once for all by hand, according to the thickness and quality of the material before commencing to hammer it.
In this hammer the pneumatic connection, the arrangements for the starting, stopping, and holding up of the hammer, as well as those for communicating the motion of the crank-pin to the hammer by means of a rocking lever and movable fulcrum, are similar to those in the planishing hammer, differing only in the details, which provide double guides and bearings for the principal working parts.
We publish illustrations of a Thwaites suspension pneumatic power ½ cwt. hammer of a new design, for planishing pipes and plates, for which we are indebted to Engineering. In the center is a cast iron guide for working the ram, the guide being extended on two sides to receive the disk crank journals, 2 in. in diameter by 3½ in. long.
'Do you think I am easier to be played on than a pipe? asked Hamlet. Is humanity more readily straightened than an iron plate?" Now, in our moral "planishing" we need to know where and how to direct our blows, lest in endeavoring to lessen the evil we not only increase the evil itself, but produce other evils almost as great as the one we intended to cure.
Had we asked an artisan practiced in 'planishing, as it is called, he would have told us that no good was to be done, but only mischief, by hitting down on the projecting part. He would have taught us how to give variously-directed and specially-adjusted blows with a hammer elsewhere: so attacking the evil, not by direct, but by indirect actions.
As it is impossible in the limits of this paper to describe all the forms in which the movable fulcrum hammers have been arranged, two types only will be selected taken from actual work; namely, a small planishing hammer, and a medium-sized forging hammer.
