So all the fashionable divorcées hitherto Bentnor's specialty were turned over to the junior partner, as a slight means of professional diversion. But he threw himself into the cases of his clients, male and female, with the same old unsparing fervor, and Flagg and Bentnor the latter was Penn's brother-in-law raised their eyebrows and shook their heads behind his back.
But Harvey's anchor-line was cut, and so was Penn's, and they were turned into relief-boats to carry fish to the We're Here as the dories filled. The caplin schooled once more at twilight, when the mad clamour was repeated; and at dusk they rowed back to dress down by the light of kerosene-lamps on the edge of the pen. It was a huge pile, and they went to sleep while they were dressing.
Again, one day after dinner, as they were drinking a glass of wine together, one of Penn's clients said, "I can tell you how you can prolong my life." "I am no physician," answered William, "but prithee tell me what thou meanest."

It is a striking fact, however, that in all the after years of war and rapine and for generations afterwards the Indians retained the most distinct and positive tradition of Penn's good faith and of the honesty of all Quakers.
The young hired man milked, and Sarah directed him calmly to bring the milk to the new barn. He came gaping, dropping little blots of foam from the brimming pails on the grass. Before the next morning he had spread the story of Adoniram Penn's wife moving into the new barn all over the little village.
'The undying fires of enthusiasm at once blazed up within him, one record declares. 'He was exceedingly reached and wept much, the Quaker chronicle assures us. He renounced every hope that he had ever cherished in order that he might realize this one. This was in 1666 the year in which London was devoured by the flames. 'Penn's conversion, says Dr. Stoughton, 'was now completed.
That customary article with which all constitutions now end appeared for the first time in Penn's Frame of Government. Another good quality of the Constitution was that it secured an abiding harmony between its fundamental statements and all further legislation.
A large part of William Penn's life as a courtier was spent in rescuing prisoners, exiles, and condemned persons of all sorts, and not merely those of his own faith. So the undertaking to make of Jersey two colonies, one a refuge for Quakers and the other a refuge for Covenanters, was natural enough, and it was a very broad-minded plan for that age.
Then the governor whom the king had appointed during Penn's retirement was a soldier, and his un-Quakerlike notions as to the right conduct of a colony brought a new element of confusion into affairs which were already sufficiently confounded. At last, in 1699, it became possible for the founder to make another visit to his province. He brought his family with him, evidently intending to stay.
