From the period during which Greek architecture was being built up to its maturity, say from the seventh century B. C. to the completion of the Parthenon in the fifth century B. C., the whole life of the Greek was coloured and dominated by his religion and its observances; and his religion was not the sinister mystery of Egypt, but on the whole a cheerful open-air Pantheism that gloried in the life and beauty of the visible world in which he lived.
Hence, also, the common antithesis of natural science and mental or moral science is untenable. Every science, as such, is both natural and mental. That is a firm principle of Monism, which, on its religious side, we may also denominate Pantheism. Man is not above, but in, nature.

The one accounts for its origin on the principle of natural development, the other on that of supernatural interposition.

The only Deity whom we can worship is One who stands above the world's confusion, its Moral Governor and Righteous Judge. But Pantheism identifies not only God with the universe, but ourselves with God.
