"That is like the Hindoo proverb, 'That which exists is one; sages call it variously. That has been called pantheism, and for that belief the Jews expelled Baruch Benedict Spinoza from their synagogue.
But what is true of the idea is not true of the being; no such vague, indeterminate, indifferent being exists; and yet Pantheism confounds the idea with the being, and rests entirely on that confusion of thought."
But that it was intended to be Pantheism there can be no doubt. But Uddâlaka rejects this latter doctrine as unthinkable which, indeed, many explorers of Hegel have found with pain and anguish of mind. And then the father traces all the multiformity of the Universe to the desire or will of the original One, "that which is." "It thought, 'may I be many; may I grow forth. It sent forth fire."
But the Eleatics went beyond the realm of physics to pure metaphysical inquiries. This is the second stage in the history of philosophy an idealistic pantheism, which disregarded the sensible and maintained that the source of all truth is independent of sense.
Not being much a reader of Newspapers, I had hardly heard of the Election till after it was finished; and I did not know that anything of this melancholy element of Heterodoxy, "Pantheism," etc. etc., had been introduced into the matter.
German philosophy has borrowed its pantheism from India rather than from Greece, and in its most shadowy developments it has never transcended the ancient Vedantism of Vyasa.

The burden of the philosophy of the Shin-gon, looked at from one point of view, is mysticism, and from another, pantheism. One of the forms of Buddha is the principle of everything. There are ten stages of thought, and there are two parts, "lengthwise" and "crosswise" or exoteric and esoteric.
Recurring to the austere theses of Spinoza, he sought to bring them into accord with a religion of emotion. The result was a refined Pantheism with its usual deceptive solutions. What recourse is left? Where are we to look for the intellectual moment of religion in the future? Let us review the situation.
And, though Matthew Arnold was too literary to be a Pantheist, that is, though he thought more of forms of expression than of ultimate reality, his satirical disintegration of the creeds, wherever it is effective, makes Pantheism the only religious alternative.
For many both in the east and west the one essential and indubitable fact throughout the experience is God, yet Buddhists are equally decided in holding that the experience has nothing to do with any deity. This is not a mere question of interpretation. It means that views as to theism and pantheism are indifferent for the attainment of this happy state.
