The one-price system has come as a necessity, since it reduces the friction of life, and protects the child or simple person in the selection of things needed, just the same as if the buyer were an expert in values and a person who could strike back if imposed upon. Safety, peace and decency demanded the one-price system.
The best lawyers now are businessmen, and their work is to keep the commercial craft in a safe channel, where it will not split on the rocks of litigation nor founder in the shallows of misunderstanding. Every lawyer will tell you this, "To make money you must satisfy your customers." The greatest change in business came with the one-price system.
The self- preservation of the race demanded honesty, square dealing, one price to all. The change came only after a struggle, and we are not quite sure of the one-price deal yet. But we have gotten thus far: that the man who cheats in trade is tabu. Honesty as a business asset is fully recognized.
V.V., with rather a long face for the way expenses seemed to be mounting up. "Fine for on'y a carpenter, oh, yes," said Kern, "but not hardly what you'd recmend to a doctor, oh, no." The young man said ruefully that perhaps he had better investigate the One-Price bargains, before Jem Noonan gobbled them all up.
One of his salesmen, as we all sat together at the table, asked him: "Mr. Blank, how many years have you been doing the one-price, plain-figure business?" ""A little over four years," said he. ""And how old are you?" the salesman asked. ""Fifty-five," was the answer. ""In other words," said he, "you have been a thief for over half a century."
All the large and successful retail stores in this country are on the one-price basis. The only further step required is to throw overboard the idea of pricing on what the traffic will bear and instead go to the common-sense basis of pricing on what it costs to manufacture and then reducing the cost of manufacture.
"'How would a hundred and forty strike you, cash down? he said. "'I'm needing the other ten, I said. 'I'm a one-price man. I didn't start the talk, nohow. "'Well, we won't fight over the ten, he said, 'but here is one trouble, Alf. You are under age, and I don't often trade with minors.
It was perfectly obvious that in one respect the announcements of the attractive placard departed from the truth: O'Reilly was not a 'one-price man, He charged for every article what he thought his customers were likely to pay. The result was that every sale involved prolonged bargaining and heated argument. In most cases no harm was done.
And one sultry night in mid-July, the little buncher seemed able to talk of nothing but the astonishing suit Jem Noonan had just obtained at the One-Price Outfitting Company for the somewhat laughable sum of $7.90.
There are no subtleties to pique our curiosity, no problems left us for discussion, no room for difference of opinion. There is no more opportunity for speculation than in a one-price clothing store where every article is marked in plain figures. To have heartily disliked Mr. Pecksniff and to have loved the Cheeryble Brothers indicates no sagacity on our part.
