First, They are so erected and extolled, that they are more looked to than the weighty matters of the law of God: all good discipline must be neglected before they be not holden up. A covetous man is an idolater, for this respect among others, as Davenant noteth, because he neglects the service which he oweth to God, and is wholly taken up with the gathering of money.
Surely those bowels of mercies, kindness, and forbearance, which the Apostle requireth, as they should be in every Christian, Col. iii. 12, 13, so chiefly in iis qui praesunt, as Melancthon noteth, in them towards all, but chiefly towards these who are both good Christians and good subjects; towards these in all things, but chiefly in matters of ceremony and indifferency.
Two of them, a little in advance of the others, were standing with their guns in their hands, as cold and as hard frozen as a monument of marble standing sentinel with loaded guns in their frozen hands! The tale is told. Were they true men? Does He who noteth the sparrow's fall, and numbers the hairs of our heads, have any interest in one like ourselves? Yes; He doeth all things well.
One of our own writers upon this same place noteth, that this scandal which Christ eschewed, had been a scandal taken only, because the exactors of the tribute-money ought not to have been ignorant of Christ’s immunity and dignity; yet because they were ignorant of the same, lest he should seem to give a scandal, cedere potius sua libertate voluit.
Another of our antiquaries noteth not long before that Council, that Antichrist did then begin to appear at Rome, and to exalt himself over all other bishops. Now if we should reckon the beginning of the beast’s reign about the time of that Council, the end of it will fall in at this very time of ours. But I dare not determine so high a point.
Paul noteth, "to look for a sign," not onely before they would submit themselves to the government of Moses, but also after they had obliged themselves by their submission. Whereas Signs, and Miracles had for End to procure Faith, not to keep men from violating it, when they have once given it; for to that men are obliged by the law of Nature.
I was sorry I had spoken, especially when he said mournfully: "Thou forgettest that Launcelot is here; and where Launcelot is, she noteth not the going forth of the king, nor what day he returneth." Of course, I changed the Subject. Yes, Guenever was beautiful, it is true, but take her all around she was pretty slack.
It noteth not only those that go before others by doctrine, or good example: but that govern and rule others by authority. For, 1. Thus the word is used in Scripture: "One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity," 1 Tim. iii. 4: where it plainly notes an authoritative ruling. Again, "If a man know not how to rule his own house," 1 Tim. iii. 5.
Sect. 4. Thirdly, The churches of Pergamos and Thyatira are reproved for suffering the use of idolothites, Rev. ii. 14-20, where the eating of things sacrificed to idols is condemned as idolatry and spiritual adultery, as Perkins noteth.
Which gloss, though it be not to be received, yet as Camero noteth, it is ordinary to call that necessary which is very profitable and expedient.
