The mantra leaves it undetermined what these lights are; but from what follows about the 'five-people, &c., we learn that what is meant are the senses which light up as it were their respective objects. 'Of mind' denotes mind, i. e. the so-called internal organ.

As regards the boons, I consider them as already obtained by me, O Brahmana! The Brahmana thereupon said, 'If, O gentle maid, thou dost not, O thou of sweet smiles, wish to obtain boons from me, do thou then take this mantra from me for invoking the celestials! Any one amongst the celestials whom thou mayst invoke by uttering this mantra, will appear before thee and be under thy power.

It has been ordained for the Sudra also, O Bharata! A Sudra, however, is not competent to titter swaha and swadha or any other Vedic mantra. For this reason, the Sudra, without observing the vows laid down in the Vedas, should worship the gods in minor sacrifices called Paka-yajnas. The gift called Purna-patra is declared to be the Dakshina of such sacrifices.

But, an objection is raised, while the mantra 'in whom the five five- people, &c., is common to the Kanvas and the Madhyandinas, the complementary passage 'they who know the breath of breath, &c., in the text of the former makes no mention of food, and hence we have no reason to say that the 'five-people' in their text are the breath, eye, and so on. To this objection the next Sutra replies.

Literally, the one duty of a guru has come to be to communicate once in a lifetime to each Hindu his saving mantra or Sanscrit text; periodically thereafter, the guru may visit his clients to collect what dues they may be pleased to give. The place of religious teacher in Hinduism is vacant, and Christianity and modern thought are taking the vacant place.

The mantra, 'There was darkness, hidden in darkness, &c. Samh.

To translate a mantra is to change it from a "Word of Power" into an ordinary sentence; the sounds being changed, other sound-forms are created.

That is to say in the same way as the mantra 'pierce the heart' enables us to infer that also the mantra 'pierce the sukra' belongs to some magical rite, so we infer from the special meaning of mantras such as 'I shall speak the right, &c., that also mantras such as 'May Mitra be propitious' are connected with the study of the Veda, and do not therefore form part of meditations.

Like the history of so many Sanskrit words as now uttered in every-day English speech, the story of the word mantra forms a picture of mental processes and apparently of the degradation of thought, or, as some will doubtless say, of the decay of religion. The term mantra meant first, a thought; then thought expressed; then a Vedic hymn or text; next a spell or charm.

As discipline for the attainment of excellence along the path marked out in the "Mantra sect," there are three mystic rites: worshipping the Buddha with the hand in certain positions called signs; repeating Dharani, or mystic formulas; contemplation.
