The leaves of the latter are small, opposite, and of a sapgreen; those of the former grow promiscuously and are of a silver green. Their uses are chiefly in cookery, and for purposes where a strong acid is required, as in cleaning the blades of their krises and bringing out the damask, for which they are so much admired. It is a common substitute for our acid fruits in tarts.

Along the line of the Bazaar ranged another thousand men, armed only with krises, under the command of the heir of the late Dakoon, and with these were a hundred and fifty mounted hillsmen, watchful and deliberate. These were also under the command of a kinsman of Pango Dooni.

The clothes were so disposed on the bier as to represent a figure, and laid beside it were handsome gold cloths and ornaments, gold buttons, krises, and breastplates, and weapons of Javanese manufacture, representing some hundreds of dollars. There were also gongs and two brass guns.

Oh, I say, Tom, didn't I think of the crocodiles!" "You're such a cheeky little beggar, I wonder they didn't get you," said Tom, who looked feverish and excited. "I say, Bob Roberts, you know what that chap, that Kling fellow, said to us about the krises." "Yes, of course. What then?" "Do you think they are poisoned?" "No, not a bit. Do you?"

The interpreter did not understand Mahratti, in which Abdool and Harry always conversed; but he said in Hindustani: "I have seen fights with leopards, my lord, but even with krises, two of my people would hesitate to attack one they fear them more than tigers but little did I think that two men, with small knives, could save their lives from one.

"We are getting on," he said in a satisfied way "only got to smug a couple of krises, and there we are. I say, my leg smarts, and I should like to have a look at it; but I won't light a match, because it would be risky in amongst these leaves and I ain't got one. Well, that will do for to-night, so good-night. I am beginning to think I am tired."

"The worst of it is the alligators, Harry." "Yes, but we must risk that. We shall have the krises, and if they seize either of us, the other must go down and try and jab his kris into the beast's eyes. I know it is a frightfully dangerous business, and the chances are one hundred to one against our succeeding; but there is just a chance, and there is no chance at all if we leave it until tomorrow.

Suddenly, during the night, they rose without the slightest warning and flew simultaneously with their krises upon the seamen and marines, and before the latter could defend themselves, one marine was killed and the remainder of the guard severely wounded.

Spears had been thrust and darted through, blows struck through cracks and holes with krises and the deadly sword-like parang, and in spite of the fierce and slowly-sustained fire kept up, the defences were rapidly becoming more dilapidated, and several fresh wounds had been received.

It only served to delay the revenge until a proper opportunity offered of gratifying it. The people of the country being called together on a particular occasion, the two inimical families were assembled, at the same time, in Manna bazaar. They quickly returned, drew their krises, and attacked the pangeran's brothers, calling to them, if they were men, to defend themselves.
