The British cavalry horses are such stupendous creatures that given a good rifle and a keen eye it is difficult for one to miss them. They certainly make most excellent targets. It is my firm opinion that for usefulness the cavalryman cannot be compared to the mounted infantryman.
The suddenness and surprise of the movement started the ends of Cowan's moustache to twitching. "Sir," spoke up the muddy infantryman, "here's that bozo we all been lookin' for." Major Cowan arose. "Count von Herzmann, I believe?" he said as calmly as though it were a social meeting. The prisoner lifted his eyebrows in well feigned surprise.
On either side of him stood a German infantryman with rifle and fixed bayonet. Here and there, too, were several German hussars, together with ten or a dozen peasants of the locality.
Are you not ashamed?" "Gawd, major! I just couldn't keep up. I got a cut foot " "Sit down on that rock. Take off your shoe what is left of it. Now, let me see. Is that the cut, that scratch above the ankle?" "It ain't how deep it is. It's how it hurts." "There is no infantryman to-day who is not footsore and tired. Only the straggler or deserter has as few marks as you to show.
The joke was too good to keep to himself, and he passed it to Beefy next time he came near. Beefy saw the jest clearly and guffawed aloud, to the amazement of a clay-daubed infantryman who had had nothing in his mind but thoughts of death and loading and firing his rifle for hours past. 'Don't wonder Ben's agin conscription, said Beefy; 'they might conscription 'im, and passed on grinning.
But Guynemer immediately added: "It gives so much pleasure to the poilus watching us down there." The sky-juggler was working for his brother the infantryman.
But the infantryman only glared, probably did not hear, he was so busy trying to keep his seat; and paying no attention to Ray, went alternately jerking and kicking up the row, while Dandy, startled, amazed, tortured, and high-strung, backed and plunged and tugged at the bit. A mother who sees her child abused by some ruffian of a big boy knows what Ray suffered from that scene.
In days of peace garrison life was monotonous. But the Apaches needed constant watching. As a soldier, the Apache was cruel and cowardly. He always fought dismounted, never making an attack unless at his own advantage. As infantryman he was unequalled.
It was pitch pine, very fat with resin, and a little piece split off each day added much to our fires and our comfort. One morning, upon examining the pockets of an infantryman of my hundred who had just died, I had the wonderful luck to find a silver quarter. I hurried off to tell Andrews of our unexpected good fortune.
There is no shadow of a doubt about this in ancient narrations. The cavalryman only fought the cavalryman. He threatened, harassed, troubled the infantryman in the rear, but he did not fight him. He slaughtered him when put to flight by other infantry, or at least he scattered him and the light infantry slaughtered him. Cavalry is a terrible weapon in the hands of one who knows how to use it.
