Rigid Brownists or Separatists say, that the fraternity or community of the faithful unpresbyterated is the first receptacle of proper ecclesiastical power from Christ: unto whom some of independent judgment subscribe. Independents thus resolve: First, That the apostles of Christ are the first subject of apostolical power.

The new legislators were good Independents "faithful, fearing God, and hating covetousness." Recommended by Independent ministers, they felt that God had called them to rule in righteousness.

More: I had never even heard of him or mentioned him up to that day and date. The next newspaper article that attracted my attention was the following: A SWEET CANDIDATE. Mr. Mark Twain, who was to make such a blighting speech at the mass-meeting of the Independents last night, didn't come to time!

It is true that such a number of voters could effect the election or defeat of a great many Democrats or Republican Congressmen, but, as Mr. Gompers says, it could only elect a score or two of Independents, a number which, as the example of Populism has shown, would be impotent under our political system.

In the parliament, a considerable majority, and a much greater in the nation, were attached to the Presbyterian party; and it was only by cunning and deceit at first, and afterwards by military violence, that the Independents could entertain any hopes of success.

The leaders shrank from the odium of such sanguinary exhibitions, and transported the rest of the prisoners to the continent. But if the zeal of the Independents was more sparing of blood than that of the Presbyterians, it was not inferior in point of rapacity. The ordinances for sequestration and forfeiture were executed with unrelenting severity.

One consisted of friends from his own State who were political independents; the other came from the head of the Republican political machine. Both wanted him as a candidate for Governor.

Occasionally he vindicated with great animation the right of every freeman to worship God according to his own conscience; and presently he charged the guilt and misery of the people on the awful negligence of their rulers, who had not only failed to establish presbytery as the national religion, but had tolerated sectaries of various descriptions, Papists, Prelatists, Erastians, assuming the name of Presbyterians, Independents, Socinians, and Quakers: all of whom Kettledrummle proposed, by one sweeping act, to expel from the land, and thus re-edify in its integrity the beauty of the sanctuary.

"Johnson of the independents told me that you never gave them contracts, except for each lot. You see, that's how we got in on the deal." "Yes, that's how we got in," Cicily echoed, in a gentle murmur. There was an infinity of satisfaction in her voice. "We'll make them break with you," Carrington shouted, roughly.

While Catholics, Independents, and other sectaries were content with entertaining some prospect of toleration, Prelacy and Presbytery struggled for the superiority, and the hopes and fears of both parties kept them in agitation.
