We pass over, as of no consequence for our present purpose, the various exceptions which he then takes to Huxley's arrangement of his lectures, to the tone of his exceptions, and to his mode of referring to the biblical hypothesis, and come to what he has to say of Huxley's evidence, which he truly calls "circumstantial evidence."
The accuracy of Professor Huxley's statements about the history and literature of evolution is like the direct interference of the Deity it vanishes whenever and wherever I have occasion to test it. I should be very glad to come across some of the "little consideration" which will show this. I have searched for it far and wide, and have never been able to find it.
Some of you must, all of you should, have read Professor Huxley's "Address on Education." Among the anomalous forms of Old Red fishes not referable to Huxley's Crossopterygii is the Pterichthys, of which five species have been found in the middle division of the Old Red of Scotland. Some writers have compared their shelly covering to that of Crustaceans, with which, however, they have no real affinity.
This view is at the opposite extreme from Huxley's, for it overlooks the advantages mankind has gained by means of the social instinct and the social solidarity which it secures. But there is a further point in Nietzsche's reflexions which is suggested by the theory of development.
Nor should we omit mention of Huxley's Bathybius Haeckelii, a slimy substance supposed to exist in great masses in the depths of the ocean and to consist of undifferentiated protoplasm, the exhaustless fountain from which all other forms of life had been derived.

As to The Club I am quite in favour of Huxley's admission; but have we only one vacancy?
