The growth of the gland during gestation would then be due to the postponement of the process of secretion in consequence of the presence of the foetal hormone, and in this way this hormone has become in the course of evolution at once the stimulus to growth and the cause of the inhibition of secretion. This interpretation does not, however, agree with the case of Dasyurus.

And this is no doubt true, but it by no means follows that the particular order and harmony observed among them should be that which we see. Mr. Darwin endeavours to explain the exact order of organic nature which exists; not the mere fact that there is some order.

Later, in the foetal life, at birth, and through infancy though the organs of sex serve to distinguish the male from the female, there is in the general structure and working of the organism little or nothing to divide the sexes.
