A single experiment will serve to show that under certain conditions a soluble substance maybe obtained from starch grains. If dried starch grains are rubbed between two glass plates, the grains will be seen under the microscope to be fissured, and if then wetted and filtered, the filtrate will be a perfectly clear liquid showing a strong starch reaction with iodine.

If soluble starch is not at hand, potato starch may be used. Mix about 1 gram with 5 cc. of cold water to a smooth paste, pour 150 cc. of !boiling! water over it, warm for a moment on the hot plate, and put it aside to settle. Decant the supernatant liquid through a filter and use the clear filtrate; 5 cc. of this solution are needed for a titration.
The volume thus calculated will be in excess of that actually required for precipitation, since the acids are in part consumed in the oxidation process, or are volatilized. Heat the solution to boiling, and allow the precipitated ferric hydroxide to settle. Wash twice by decantation with 100 cc. of hot water. Reserve the filtrate.
The filtrate is shaken with ether to remove fat, etc., the ether separated, the watery solution neutralized with soda, and then shaken with ether, which removes the alkaloid in a more or less impure condition.
The filtrate is then poured into a cylinder capable of holding 100 cubic centimeters, and furnished with a scale; sufficient distilled water is then added until the well-shaken fluid measures precisely 100 cubic centimeters. By means of this measuring instrument, the filtrate is then divided into two equal portions.
