As previously suggested, a drop or two of the tincture of iron, a grain or two of the reduced iron, or 2 or 3 grains of saccharated ferric oxid, given once or twice in twenty-four hours, is all the iron the body needs from the points of view of the blood and the heart. Calcium: It has lately been learned that calcium is an element which a heart needs for perfect activity.
Prepare a fresh solution, as needed each day, by dissolving a crystal of potassium ferricyanide about the size of a pin's head in 25 cc. of distilled water. The salt should be carefully tested with ferric chloride for the presence of ferrocyanides, which give a blue color with ferric salts.
But it must be understood that most auriferous lode stuff contains a proportion of sulphides of various metals, wherein a part of the gold, usually in a very finely divided state, is enclosed, and on this gold the mercury has no influence. Also many lodes contain hard heavy ferric ores, such as titanic iron, tungstate of iron, and hematite, in which gold is held.
When the examination is made in the above manner, it is impossible to separate the two metals, for the peroxide will bring down with it a considerable quantity of ferric hydrate. The separation of the two metals is only possible when the precipitation of the manganese peroxide is prevented, until the greater portion of the iron has been deposited.
Wash the filter five times with hot water, add to the filtrate ammonium hydroxide and bromine water as described above, and repeat the precipitation. Collect the precipitate on the filter already used, wash it free from chlorides with hot water, and ignite and weigh as described for ferric hydroxide on page 110. Calculate the percentage of the combined oxides in the limestone.
The volume thus calculated will be in excess of that actually required for precipitation, since the acids are in part consumed in the oxidation process, or are volatilized. Heat the solution to boiling, and allow the precipitated ferric hydroxide to settle. Wash twice by decantation with 100 cc. of hot water. Reserve the filtrate.

Test a portion of the last washing with a dilute solution of ammonium sulphide to assure complete removal of the zinc.
