After a few baths have been taken, the carbon dioxid baths are commenced, beginning with a small quantity of the gas which is later gradually increased. This course of baths should be continued from four to eight weeks. Unless there is some special reason for taking them at some other period of the year, they are taken more advantageously during the warm months.
If there is any smoke, it is due to small particles of unburned carbon or other colored substances. "As a rule more or less sulfur is contained in coal, wood, and other organic matter, and this also is burned to sulfur dioxid and carried into the air, from which it is brought back to the soil in rain in ample amounts to supply all of the sulfur required by plants.

All decay of organic matter, as in the fermentation of manure in the pile and the rotting of vegetable matter in the soil, is a form of slow combustion and carbon dioxid is the chief produce of such decay.
Then the dough is set away in a warm place "to rise," which means that the busy little yeast cells, eagerly attacking the rich supply of starchy food spread before them, and encouraged by the heat and moisture, multiply by millions and billions, and in the process of growing and multiplying, give off, like all other living cells, the gas, carbon dioxid.
When plants or plant products are burned or decomposed the carbon of the combustible material grass, wood, coal, and so forth unites with the free oxygen of the atmosphere to re-form the carbon dioxid, which thus returns as a gas to the air.
By experiment it has been found that the pressure of oxygen in the blood is less than that in the air cells, and that the pressure of carbon dioxid gas in the blood is greater than that in the air cells. As a result, a diffusion of gases ensues. The blood gains oxygen and loses carbon dioxid, while the air cells lose oxygen and gain the latter gas.
Breathe on a thermometer for a few minutes. The mercury will rise rapidly. Experiment 119. To show that expired air is moist. Breathe on a mirror, or a knife blade, or any polished metallic surface, and note the deposit of moisture. Experiment 120. To show that the expired air contains carbon dioxid. Put a glass tube into a bottle of lime water and breathe through the tube.
