In the last which is a ground of "tan" blotched and mottled with large spots of black and grey he bears a striking resemblance to the common hound; and the superior size of his ears would seem to assimilate him still more to this animal. The ears, however, as in all the wild species of Canis, are of course not hanging, but erect. His habits, however, crown the resemblance.
The common hog has also run wild on one islet; all are of a black colour: the boars are very fierce, and have great trunks. The "culpeu" is the Canis Magellanicus brought home by Captain King from the Strait of Magellan. It is common in Chile. Pernety, Voyage aux Isles Malouines, p. 526.
The Augustan age furnishes numerous examples. A bone snatched from the jaws of a fasting bitch, and a feather from the wing of a night-owl "ossa ab ore rapta jejunae canis, plumamque nocturnae strigis" were necessary for Canidia's incantations.
On the Continent Poodles of the larger kind are often used for draught work. There can be little doubt that the breed originated in Germany, where it is known as the Pudel, and classed as the Canis familiaris Aquaticus. In form and coat he would seem to be closely related to the old Water-dog, and the resemblance between a brown Poodle and an Irish Water Spaniel is remarkable.
He commends her in Hades to his own father and mother gone before him, that the child may not be frightened in the dark, friendless among the shades "Parvula ne nigras horrescat Erotion umbras Oraque Tartarei prodigiosa canis." There is a kind of playfulness in the sorrow, and the pity of a man for a child; pity that shows itself in a smile.
"Nay, I have heard nothing; but I have seen the cloth, and had like to have been bitten for no greater crime than wishing to know what it covered." "Bitten! then, after all, the animal must be carnivorous! It is too tranquil for the ursus horridus; if it were the canis latrans, the voice would betray it. Nor would Nelly Wade be so familiar with any of the genus ferae.
"God forbid, honoured Lady," said Doctor Lundin, "that you should suppress it longer nothing may more endanger the frame of your honoured body; and truly, if there be witchcraft in this matter, it is held by the vulgar, and even by solid authors on Demonology, that three scruples of the ashes of the witch, when she hath been well and carefully burned at a stake, is a grand Catholicon in such matter, even as they prescribe crinis canis rabidi, a hair of the dog that bit the patient, in cases of hydrophobia.
There are two canines: one is Azara's beautiful grey fox-like dog, purely a fox in habits, and common everywhere. The other is far more interesting and extremely rare; it is called aguara, its nearest ally being the aguara-guazu, the Canis jubatus or maned wolf of naturalists, found north of the pampean district.
Robinson, with a large white Pomeranian sitting by her side. In Rees' Encyclopedia, published in 1816, a good picture of a white Pomeranian is given with a fairly truthful description. In this work he is said to be "larger than the common sheep dog." Rees gives his name as Canis Pomeranius, from Linnaeus, and Chien Loup, from Buffon.
Without either telescope or technical knowledge, the careful observer of the stars will notice that the most brilliant constellations show this tendency. The glorious Orion, Canis Major containing the brightest star in the heavens, Cassiopeia, Perseus, Cygnus, and Lyra with its bright-blue Vega, not to mention such constellations as the Southern Cross, all lie in or near the Milky Way.
