"I hear the noise about thy keel, I hear the bell struck in the night, I see the cabin-window bright, I see the sailor at the wheel," repeated Fred , in my ear. "Come below out of this wet and rain," added he. We passed the door of the mate's state-room as we went below, and, seeing it ajar, and Mr. Pitman, the mate, sitting there, we looked in.
In the meantime I had been looking upon the shore from the cabin-window, and speculating upon which animal I should take; then I quickly rushed out, and before the proprietors of the long-eared steeds were aware of my intention, I had seized one by the bridle and pointed to another.
"Get close up under the cabin-window," said Mr Gregory, "if we can find the ship. If we can lay the boat right under the stern we shall be safer from those on deck, for they could not see us." "Yes," said the major gazing over the sea; "but, my dear sir, we must find the ship first before we can get to her stern."
There were some sick and wounded on board, who could not avail themselves of this method; we, therefore, got a spare top-sail-yard from the chains and placed one end ashore and the other on the cabin-window, so that most of the sick got ashore this way. As I had determined, so I was the last man out of the ship; this was about ten o'clock. The gale now began to break.
"Oh, my captain, my captain! noble heart go not go not! see, it's a brave man that weeps; how great the agony of the persuasion then!" "Lower away!"-cried Ahab, tossing the mate's arm from him. "Stand by for the crew!" In an instant the boat was pulling round close under the stern. "The sharks! the sharks!" cried a voice from the low cabin-window there; "O master, my master, come back!"
Said cook is a Portuguese, a distinguished artist, and a great bird-fancier. One can wander all over the ship here, instead of being a prisoner on the poop; and I even have paid my footing on the forecastle. S- clambers up like a lively youngster. You may fancy what the weather is, that I have only closed my cabin-window once during half of a very damp night; but no one else is so airy.
