Oh, dear little children, listen, And hear what the birdlings say! The sweetest song they ever sang "Our Lord is risen to-day!" The Lily Sisters Once upon a time there were three little sisters dressed in green, who lived together in a beautiful palace which was owned by a Great King. Such a beautiful palace as it was!

I drew an analogy between plant and animal-life, and told her that seeds are eggs as truly as hens' eggs and birds' eggs that the mother hen keeps her eggs warm and dry until the little chicks come out. I made her understand that all life comes from an egg. The mother bird lays her eggs in a nest and keeps them warm until the birdlings are hatched.

The eleventh day of the birdlings' life was exceedingly warm, without a breath of air stirring, suffocating to humanity, but preëminently inspiring to mocking-birds, and every singer within a mile of me, I am sure, was singing madly, excepting the newly made parent.

It may be thought that my assistance was not particularly valuable; the birds shared this opinion; none the less, but for my presence not one of those birdlings would be free and happy to-day, as I hope and believe they are.

The birdlings in the nest were not ready to come out, and growing impatient I drew upon the knowledge or rather the ignorance of the residents and heard some surprising statements, which further observation, however, did not confirm.

A single pair will destroy hundreds of worms, grubs, moths or beetles in a single day; and when they are present in sufficient numbers no insect or creeping thing escapes their sharp little eyes or their exceeding quickness of motion. As they multiply rapidly, there is no reason why every one of our fruit trees, every shrub and vine, should not have its nest of birdlings.

"Then, to satisfy the envious birdlings of the moor, the pomegranate slowly half-opens its fruit; the thousand vermeil seeds glitter in the sun; the thousand timorous sisters with rosy cheeks peep through the arched window: and the roguish birds come in flocks and feast at ease on the beautiful coral-grains; the roguish lovers devour with kisses the fair blushing sisters.

As the day wore on the wind increased to a gale, and my anxiety kept pace with its violence. Surely no August babies could be prepared for such November weather. Would a fall kill the delicate birdlings? Should I have to rescue them? Hardly five minutes at a time did I take my eyes off the nest, tossed on its long swaying branch like a ship in the maddest sea.

She was on closest visiting terms with innumerable broods of newly-hatched birdlings knew them, indeed, while they were still but eggs delighted in them when they were as yet but skin and mouth rejoiced in their featherings and flyings.

While Mimi and Alberich quarreled, Siegfried came from the dragon's cave, bearing the helmet and the ring. He heard no sound save the rustling of the leaves and the song of the bird. Again he sat down in the shadow of a tree. "Little bird, can you not help me to find a true friend?" asked Siegfried. "Each year you have your mate and your little birdlings in the nest.
