All summer this holiday life goes on, with bathing, lawn-tennis, and in some places golf, till at last the time comes for going home. The hotels and villas close their doors. The windows are boarded up. The bathing-machines are pulled away from the beach, and put in some sheltered place among the dunes.
'O no! she said, gazing at the bathing-machines, digging children, and other common objects of the seashore, as if her interest lay there rather than with him. 'But I am not worthy of the daughter of a genteel professional man that's what you mean? 'There's something more than worthiness required in such cases, you know, she said, still without calling her mind away from surrounding scenes.
The blaze of the spring season had burst upon Seawood, littering its foreshore with famines and bathing-machines, with nomadic preachers and nigger minstrels, before the two friends saw it again, and long before the storm of pursuit after the strange secret society had died away. Almost on every hand the secret of their purpose perished with them.
A mere streak showed the line of the King's road and all its carriages and people; the beach beneath could just be made out by the white dots of the bathing-machines; the brown fishing-boats seemed to be close in shore; the two piers were fore-shortened into small dusky masses marking the beginning of the sea.
"Neither can I. Can you go to sleep again?" "No. Can you?" "Not I. Let's get up, and creep out of doors. What fun to go down to the beach and take a bath!" "Nell! In our nighties?" "Silly! We'll hire things and bathing-machines."
Not theirs the hankering for that strip of sand near the stone pier, which a worthy dame of my acquaintance once compared to a successful fly-paper. Scientific investigation shows the congestion at this particular spot to be due to the file of bathing-machines which blocks the view of the sea from half the beach.
The idea is that you live at ease and in comfort at Bordeaux, and just run down to Arcachon for a bath. There are no bathing machines or tents; but all along the shore, in supplement of the liliputian houses that serve a double debt to pay being residences at night and bathing-machines by day, stand rows of sentry-boxes, whence the bather emerges arrayed in more or less bewitching attire.
The tide, too, seems not to have been up over the waste of sands since we went away; and far seaward stands the same row of bathing-machines, and just on the verge of the horizon a gleam of water, even this being not the sea, but the mouth of the river Ribble, seeking the sea amid the sandy desert. But we shall soon say good-by to Southport. July 22d.
Nor have I seen the picture of "The Flowing Tide," but I shall expect to find in that picture when I do see it a number of bathing-machines in which, not the younger generation, but the elder generation, as I understand are waiting confidently for the arrival of the "Flowing Tide," and when it arrives, the elderly gentlemen who are incarcerated in those machines will be only too anxious for a man and a horse to come and deliver them from their imminent peril.
On the sand were still many bathing-machines, but many others had begun to climb for greater safety during the winter to the street above.
