The First Brigade went at a double quick, guided by the sound of musketry, growing in volume. The pines were left behind; oak copse succeeded, then the up and down of grassy fields. Wooden fences stretched across the way, streamlets presented themselves, here and there gaped a ravine, ragged and deep. On and on and over all! Bee and Bartow were ahead, and Hampton and the Virginia Legion.
Major Popham, fifty-four years after the date of this letter, attended as a pall-bearer the funeral of Colonel Burr, the friend of his youth. Mrs. Prevost's son. The unfortunate Mrs. Alston, of whom much will be said hereafter. Stagehouse. New-York, August, 1786. Your letter was faithfully handed us by the boy from Hall's. Bartow has enclosed the papers.
Tell Bartow to send a deed for me to execute to Carpenter, pursuant to our contract. Pray attend to this; you will see that it may be a little interesting to me. Yours truly, Philadelphia, 15th December, 1791 I thank you for your attention to my friend, and still more for the pleasure you express at his visit.
Hampton's Legion was retiring on the right. Imboden's battery, with but three rounds remaining for each piece, galloped back across the Henry Hill, and this commanding height, the key of the battle-ground, was abandoned to the enemy. But help was at hand. Jackson, like Bee and Bartow, had been ordered to the Stone Bridge.
Waving his hand in token of farewell, Jackson galloped from the field. Keyes. Sherman. Schenck. Porter. Burnside. Franklin. Wilcox. Howard. Jackson. Bee. Bartow. Kirby Smith. Bonham. Cocke. Early. 7th Louisiana Regiment. 8th Louisiana Regiment. Hampton's Legion. Cavalry.
You know the usual eagerness on this occasion. They were all seated but Bartow, when he espied the letters; the surprise, the joy, the exclamations exceed description. The greatest stoic would have forgot himself. A silent tear betrayed me no philosopher. A most joyous repast succeeded. We talked of our happiness, of our first of blessings, our best of papas.
I had written you two before the receipt of your first. But I shall in future expect two or three for one, as the labour of business will prevent my writing frequently. Remember the note to be put in the bank on Wednesday. If Bartow should not arrive, send Strong for Willet. Adieu. Yours, A. Burr. Philadelphia, 14th November, 1791.
Colonel Burr soon put an end to these dangerous intrusions, by prohibiting all persons residing below the lines, except a few whom he selected, such as Parson Bartow, Jacob Smith, and others, whose integrity was unimpeachable, from approaching the outposts, without special permission for the purpose.

One of our sons was to have departed tomorrow in quest of the best of friends and fathers. This morning we waited the stage with impatience. Shrouder went frequently before it arrived; at length returned no letter. We were struck dumb with disappointment. Bartow set out to inquire who were the passengers; in a very few minutes returned exulting, a packet worth the treasures of the universe.
